Wrestling promoter Herb Abrams founded the UWF (no relation to the Bill Watts promotion of the same name) in 1990 to bring back classic wrestling.
He would accomplish his goal by signing many famous names that fans would feel are synonymous with old-school wrestling, such as Colonel DeBeers, Ivan Koloff, & "Ace" Cowboy Bob Orton, among others. This version of the UWF would be similar to the original ECW when it was starting, in that it did not travel and would stick to small, inexpensive venues to tape its shows. Although the UWF never toured nationally, it was seen worldwide when Abrams secured a national cable television distribution deal that would air the UWF's Fury Hour shows. The UWF also attempted to air a major pay-per-view event in 1991, called Beach Brawl, but it ultimately was considered a failure as a result of a poor buy rate.
Undaunted, Abrams would continue to run the company and secure new television deals, as the original deal that allowed the UWF to air Fury Hour had expired. The promotion was successful in securing a home video distribution deal in 1993 and the Fury Hour would be repackaged and shown again on cable.
The promotion would fold in 1996 shortly after the death of founding promoter Herb Abrams.
